![]() THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS celebrated 14 years as television's Number One daytime drama, continuing its unprecedented run of consecutive weekly wins, which reached 728 in the week ending Dec. 15. CBS won Daytime in households for the 716th consecutive week with and against regular schedules. Pierce Brosnan Bonds with three kids in a flick unlike Die Another Day Per Reuters as reported over at Yahoo! "Evelyn" is vastly different {from Die Another Day}. The movie is based on the true story of Desmond Doyle, who in 1953 fought the Irish legal system to regain custody of his children after they are made wards of the state. Doyle prefers a pint of beer to a martini. He does odd jobs and sings in the pub. His car is a beat-up old truck -- hardly the stuff of the gadget-filled Bond world. Wednesday, December 18, 2002

JAG tonight presented a traditional holiday story, complete with Mary and Joseph and the baby... well, the baby born in Admiral Chegwidden's office, and a bit of It's A Wonderful Life, complete with the bell ringing as Clarence got his wings. It was a surprisingly good episode given all the old material the writers harkened back to. Mostly because it was sentimental, and not corny. Monday, December 16, 2002
AFI MOMENTS OF SIGNIFICANCE DVD IN/VHS OUT The sale of DVDs surpassed VHS sales for the first time in 2002. In addition to signaling the desire by consumers for quality picture and sound, the enormous success of DVD inspires filmmakers and studios to invest time, effort and money in presenting additional materials for films old and new. The access to these materials represents a significant step in film education for both the general public and scholars. CRISIS IN TV JOURNALISM As television news has become a larger profit center for network and cable channels, an intensely competitive environment has increased the tendency to blur the line between news/commentary, news/entertainment and news/advocacy on all channels. AFI hopes that television will find a solution that will better serve the public interest, but in the interim, reminds audiences that the responsibility to seek an objective opinion is more difficult to find on a single channel. MOVIELINK.COM LAUNCHES MODEL FOR FUTURE DISTRIBUTION Five of Hollywood’s biggest studios (Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal, Warner Bros.) launched a video-on-demand service that will allow consumers to access the studios’ libraries of films via a broadband Internet connection. The joint venture is one of the biggest distribution advances since Hollywood’s earliest days, when studios distributed their films to a network of studio-owned theaters. Sunday, December 15, 2002
In the midst of WWI the government considered cancelling Christmas, but AC Gilbert, creator of the erector sets we all grew up with, came to the rescue of children who love this holiday, for the toys as much as anything else, and persuaded the government to let the holiday go on! Tonight on CBS the story of AC Gilbert was told -- he may not have saved Christmas tonight, but his story went a long way to helping folks in 2002 America get ready for the holiday that nearly didn't happen in the nineteen-teens. Meanwhile, Harm seems doomed to spend the holiday aboard a carrier unless he can find a ride and the Admiral and Mac have their hands full with a Marine couple about to have a baby and three lost Saudi diplomats. The Practice What an amazing script -- an airline creating a policy to not allow Arabs, or those of Arab decent, to fly on their airline. A great line of dialogue -- "it was our imagination that failed, we couldn't conceive people would hit buildings with planes". They've got a point! Monday, December 02, 2002

The Kind of Commercials I don't like... It's time I spoke up -- I don't like the commercials that announce, quite boldly in fact, CSI MIAMI is a repeat this monday, so tune in to our competing show and let us steal you away from that other network. Okay, maybe that is a bit of paraphrasing, but the competing networks letting you know when your favorite show is slated to be a rerun just doesn't feel right. Or so my ever so humble opinion goes. ![]() Sunday continues to be a strong -- and tough, night on Television. It is one of the few nights of the week, this season or any recent seaon for that matter, where I've felt torn between the major networks, all of which seem to be offering great entertainment. In the basic rundown, CBS continues to offer great fun with the Doctor who gets away with saying the things we wish we could say in Becker, followed by the Sunday Night movies which have proven with flicks like Martin & Lewis that CBS still loves to put great entertainment out there. NBC has a strong line-up with American Dreams (where part of the magic comes from Dick Clark working with his old American Bandstand footage) followed by Law & Order Criminal Intent, and Boomtown, both of which offer crimes you'll love to solve. And finally ABC has the Wonderful World of Disney, Alias where you can't help but caught up in the intrigue, and The Practice where lawyers actually come out looking good from time to time. |
