Judging Amy Offers Real Life Conflicts that help one appreciate real life!

Part of the magic and charm of Judging Amy is the very simple way in which they present the real world, and make those of us with easy lives appreciate how easy they are and those of us with rough lives realize we aren't the only ones struggling through day after day.  It is a fine line they walk, but walk well.

Courtroom dramas have a unique opportunity, especially when presented through the character of a Judge, to preach without sounding like they have no right to do so.  Instead they deliver a verdict, and explain it, just as real judges do.

At the end of the episode we understand more about the laws that govern our society, how courts work, and how lucky children are to have Judges trusted with the responsibility of making sure they have time to be children and grow up in as safe an environment as possible and how lucky they are to have Social Workers who are always well intentioned and trying to make split second decisions to decide where a child's needs are best served.

I can't help but hope that a time will come when audiences of the future will look at this as a relic of times gone by and wonder why Social Workers and family court judges were overworked and having to make such tough decisions -- but until then the modern audience is lucky to have Judge Amy Gray setting the standard.

What They Say:

(This description from CBS refers to season 1.  As of Season 2, 2001-2002, Amy's brother Vincent has moved to San Francisco and her cousin Kyle has come to Hartford.  He is a recovering drug addict trying to keep others from repeating his mistake, and has moved in with Vincent's old roommate, Donna Kozlowski-Pant.)

JUDGING AMY AMY is a drama starring Amy Brenneman ("NYPD Blue") as a single mother who has left New York behind and become a family court judge in Hartford, Connecticut. Recently divorced and raising her young daughter Lauren (Karle Warren), Judge Amy Gray has moved in with her very opinionated mother, Maxine (Tyne Daly); re-established a friendship with her free-spirited brother, Vincent (Dan Futterman); her older brother, Peter (Marcus Giamatti), and his wife, Gillian (Jessica Tuck), and is continuing to make her fresh start work. Assisting Amy in the courtroom are her court services officer, Bruce Van Exel (Richard T. Jones), and her overeager court clerk, Donna Kozlowski-Pant (Jillian Armenante). JUDGING AMY, based on the real-life story of Brenneman's mother, is about three generations of women living together as they confront the personal and professional dilemmas in their changing challenging lives.
