BURBANK, Calif. -- December 10, 2002 -- NBC and Carsey-Werner-Mandabach have made a deal with Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg for her to star in and serve as executive producer of a new comedy series to be produced by CWM along with NBC Studios, it was announced today by Jeff Zucker, President, NBC Entertainment, and Carsey-Werner-Mandabach.
“Few stars are as well-known and universally loved as the one and only Whoopi Goldberg,” said Zucker. “She’s clever, creative and most of all funny. We look forward to developing a great sitcom with this comedic master.”
"Whoopi Goldberg is one of the great comediennes of our time, and she is beloved because she is a truth teller," said CWM's Tom Werner. “We are ecstatic to be working with her on a series that will showcase her prodigious talent."
While details of the pilot have not yet been determined, the project will highlight Goldberg’s unique voice and observations on life.
Goldberg, who will be starring next month in the Broadway revival of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” has had a long and varied career. She earned a Tony Award as a producer on “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” an Emmy Award for AMC's "Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel,” a Grammy Award for “Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway,” and an Oscar for her performance in the film “Ghost,” making her one of the few artists to win these four prestigious awards.
Goldberg’s
other feature credits include “Star Trek: Nemesis,” “Sister Act,”
“Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” “The Color Purple,” “Jumpin’ Jack
Flash,” “Made in America,” “The Lion King” (voice), “Corinna,
Corinna,” “The Little Rascals,” “Rat Race,” “The Deep End of the
Ocean” and “Ghosts of Mississippi.”
Likewise, Goldberg has been a creative force in television as an executive
producer and series regular on the recent revival of “Hollywood Squares” and
as an executive producer of the cable series “Strong Medicine.” She has
produced numerous movies for television, including “What Makes a Family,”
“Ruby’s Bucket of Blood” and “Call Me Claus.” Next, she and Danny
Glover will co-produce and star in Showtime’s “Good Fences.” Goldberg was
also a regular on the series “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” starred in
the 1990 comedy “Bagdad Café,” and has guest-starred in dozens of series
and specials such as NBC’s “It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie.”
In addition, Goldberg has hosted several Academy Award ceremonies.
Executive producers of the new pilot project are Whoopi Goldberg, Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner and Caryn Mandabach.
