EPISODES FROM NINE SEASONS OF THE CBS SERIES
"TOUCHED
BY AN ANGEL"
Over
the course of nine extraordinary seasons, TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL has explored
powerful subject matter with sincerity and thoughtfulness.
Following is a sampling of some of the outstanding episodes and some of
the remarkable guest stars who have helped tell the stories that are now a part
of television history.
Season One
1994
TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL premieres as a new drama about angels who are
dispatched from heaven to provide inspiration to people who find themselves at a
crossroads. Roma Downey
stars as Monica, an angel newly promoted to case-worker, enabling her to be seen
by humans, and Della Reese stars as Tess, her angel supervisor.
1994 "Tough Love" -- Monica must find a way to
help Elizabeth (guest star Phylicia Rashad), a successful journalist, admit that
her drinking threatens to permanently separate her from her family.
1995 "The Hero" -- Monica assumes the role of
a freelance reporter to help local hero Sheriff James Mackey (guest star John
Amos) realize the unnecessary pressure he is putting on his son to succeed.
Season Two
1995
"Reunion" -- Maya
Angelou guest stars as Clarice, as a woman coming to grips with her son’s
relationship with Megan (guest star Natalie Cole), a woman who has been
diagnosed with AIDS. Monica and
Tess help Clarice understand that her son’s love must be allowed to flourish
in spite of her disease.
1995
"Jacob’s Ladder" -- While on a mission to help Terry Hayman
(guest star Barbara Mandrell), Monica is placed in a mental institution and must
undergo a psychiatric evaluation when no one believes in her angelic status.
Season Three
1996
"Promised Land" -- The characters of the Network’s new drama,
"Promised Land" (1996-1999), are introduced as guest star Gerald
McRaney appears as Russell Greene, an unemployed man who moves his family to the
small town of Chicory Creek in search of a job and a better life.
This season, John Dye (Andrew) joins the cast as a series regular.
1997
"Clipped Wings" -- When Monica misses her performance evaluation, she
is officially suspended from all of her angel privileges and power on this
special episode in which James Earl Jones guest
stars as the Angel of Angels.
1997
"At Risk" -- Gen. Colin Powell introduces and closes this
episode in which a juvenile offender is given a second chance to make a
difference in both his life and the life of a severely handicapped child through
an experimental volunteer program. Powell’s
appearance is part of his involvement with former President Clinton’s Summit
on America’s Future (April 27-29, 1997).
1997 "A Delicate Balance" -- Olympic gold
medalists Kerri Strug, Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner guest star on this episode
in which a mother jeopardizes the health and welfare of her daughter by pushing
her too hard. The episode was fully
sponsored by Johnson & Johnson in support of National Safe Kids Week (May
10-18, 1997).
Season Four
1997
"Great Expectations"
– "Life Goes On" star Chris Burke reprises his guest starring role
of Special Agent Taylor who comes to the aid of a couple whose marriage is
thrown into turmoil when they learn that their unborn child has Down Syndrome.
1997 "The Comeback" -- There are angels over
Broadway when a young woman (guest star Carrie Hamilton) finally gets her big
break as Monica’s understudy, only to discover that her mother (guest star
Carol Burnett, Hamilton’s real mother) has unfinished business with the star
of the show. Rita Moreno, Tim
Conway and Carol Channing also guest star and the late, renowned sketch artist
Al Hirschfeld makes a cameo appearance.
1998 "True Stories from Touched by An Angel,"
a CBS entertainment special, explores the remarkable impact that the top-rated
drama series has had on so many lives and is hosted by stars Roma Downey, Della
Reese and John Dye.
1998 "The Spirit of Liberty Moon" -- Richard
Gere makes a special appearance to introduce the season four finale in which an
American businessman (guest star Adrian Pasdar) smuggles his Chinese aide (guest
star Bai Ling) back into her country to search for her lost family, risking his
career and her life.
Season Five
1998
"Miles To Go Before I Sleep" -- Monica and Andrew are sent to find a
mysterious man who has been posing as the Angel of Death in a hospital ward for
the terminally ill. Chad Lowe guest
stars.
1998 "Psalm 151" -- Singing superstars Celine
Dion and Wynonna Judd guest star on the landmark 100th episode
in which the angels help a loving mother (Judd) come to terms with her young
son’s terminal illness.
1999
"Family Business" -- Guest star Bill Cosby returns for another
appearance as the Angel of Reconciliation and helps a family cope with the
tragic death of an estranged son.
1999 "Black Like Monica" -- Legendary civil
rights activist Rosa Parks guest stars as herself when Monica confronts racism
in a small Southern town when an innocent man becomes the victim of a fatal hate
crime. John Ritter also guest stars
as the sheriff of the small town.
1999 "Fighting the Good Fight" -- Boxing
legend Muhammad Ali guest stars as himself and comes to the aid of a talented
young boxer who is using his boxing skills against his enemies.
Season Six
1999
"Voice of An Angel" -- Pop music phenomena *NSYNC and teenage
singing sensation Charlotte Church guest star on an episode in which Monica
gives up her angelic duties when she meets Alice (Church), a musical prodigy who
does not appreciate having a gift that Monica covets.
1999
"Then Sings My Soul!" -- On an episode that features six
musical numbers sung by series star Della Reese (along with guest stars Jo Dee
Messina, Keb’ Mo’ and Jennifer Holiday), a man who just inherited the family
business must decide whether or not to keep it in the family.
2000
"Bar Mitzvah" -- On the eve of a boy’s bar mitzvah, he and
his agnostic grandfather (guest star Kirk Douglas) must come to terms with what
it means to be a man.
2000
"Mother’s Day" -- In a sequel to the 100th
episode, the angels revisit a case and help a woman (returning guest star
Wynonna Judd) who has lost her only son find forgiveness when she is confronted
by someone from her past (guest star Naomi Judd).
Jean Stapleton also guest stars.
Season Seven
2000
"The Face on the Barroom Floor" -- When a wealthy man (guest star
Richard Chamberlain) loses everything, the angels show him that there are things
in life more valuable than money, on the seventh season premiere episode.
Ray Walston guest stars as Chamberlain’s father.
2001 "The Lord Moves in Mysterious Ways" --
It’s the occasion of a celebration of Tess’ work as an angel and Monica and
Andrew have arranged a surprise party in her honor, but there’s one problem…
they can’t find Tess! Broadway
legend Joel Grey guest stars as a co-worker.
2001
"Netherlands" -- Just as Monica begins training the new angel,
Gloria (Valerie Bertinelli), a building
explosion suddenly kills many people and Monica temporarily questions her faith
in God. Knowing this, Satan (guest
star Mandy Patinkin) tests her further by tempting her with a vision of what her
future could be if she turns away from God.
2001
"Shallow Water: Parts One & Two" -- In a two-part season
finale, the seventh season ends with the angels on a mission to help a woman
learn the truth about the death of her beloved family and then help bring
together the remaining family that has been torn apart by the tragic accident. Guest
stars include Faye Dunaway, Delta Burke, Rue McClanahan, Randy Travis, John
Schneider and Nell Carter.
Season Eight
2001
"Manhunt" -- Monica, Tess and Andrew teach new angel, Gloria, a lesson
about love. Debbie Reynolds guest
stars.
2001 "The Perfect Game" -- The angels attend a
baseball game and forever change the lives of three men on an episode featuring
guest star Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron.
2001 "I’ll Be Home For Christmas" -- The
holiday season is not the same for a family dealing with the aftermath of
September 11, and the angels lend their support.
Blair Brown guest stars with a special appearance by The Mormon
Tabernacle Choir.
2002 "For All The Tea In China" -- Angela Lansbury guest stars as the angels assist a couple that can’t have children with the adoption of a Chinese baby girl.
Season Nine
2002 "Two Sides To Every Angel" -- Roma Downey
reprises her role as Monica’s evil twin Monique wreaking havoc as Gloria
suffers from a lack of confidence in angel abilities.
2002 "Remembering Me: Parts One & Two"
-- In the first part of this special two-part episode,
the angels are on an assignment when they are shattered by the news that Tess
has begun to show the early signs of Alzheimer’s Disease.
In the second hour, Tess’ condition worsens, but aided by the return of
the Angel Gabriel (guest star Ossie Davis) and the Angel of Music, guest star
Keb’ Mo’, her recovery is imminent. Charles
Shaugnessy also guest stars.
2003 "As It Is In Heaven" – Lesley Ann
Warren guest stars in the landmark 200th episode as an angel
who has lost her way. With the help
of the angels, Kelly (Warren) is guided back to the place she belongs.
2003 "I Will Walk With You: Parts One &
Two" -- TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL’s two-part series finale finds Monica up for
her career review and a promotion is in sight.
Returning guest stars include Randy Travis, Marion Ross, Patty Duke, Paul
Winfield and Cloris Leachman.
