Wednesday, July 23, 2003
New Season To Set Up Spin-off Series, ‘Stargate: Atlantis’ SCI FI Channel has ordered an eighth season of its ratings powerhouse Stargate SG-1 from MGM. Greenlit for another full season, SG-1 becomes the second longest-running science fiction drama on American television – exceeding every Star Trek series and second only to The X-Files. Currently in production on its seventh season, season eight of SG-1 is slated to premiere Summer ’04. “Stargate SG-1 is one of SCI FI’s sure-fire hits. It’s got one of the best ensemble casts on television and one of the best production teams as well,” stated SCI FI Channel President Bonnie Hammer. “It’s no wonder that the show is still going strong in its seventh season. We look forward to even bigger and better things with season 8.” Since June ’02, when the series joined the SCI FI line-up with its sixth original season, Stargate SG-1 has become the Channel’s highest-rated original series, averaging a 1.7/1,353,000 HHs/2,032,000 P2+ for new episodes (F 9P-10P) to date. Acquired episodes from the show’s earlier seasons have also packed a ratings punch. SCI FI’s Monday night stack of four SG-1 episodes back-to-back (M 7P-11P) has averaged a 1.2/985,000 HHs/1,307,000 P2+.* Season 8 of Stargate SG-1 will feature the return of the entire ensemble cast – Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge – and serve as a launchpad for a spin-off series entitled Stargate: Atlantis. Atlantis, currently in development for SCI FI, will feature an entirely new cast of explorers and scientists who will search for clues to the origins of the Stargate.
