JESSE SPENCER (Neal)

Q: When you first read the Uptown Girls script, what about the character Neal jumped out at you?

SPENCER: Music's been a big part of my background, so that definitely jumped out at me. The main thing, though, was the really good script. And my character really jumped out at me. He's a very driven guy who knows what he wants. That really struck a chord with me.

Q: How would you describe him?

SPENCER: Neal Fox is a struggling musician living in New York and originally from London. He's at the point where he can't backtrack anymore. He knows what he wants and he doesn't want anyone to stop him from getting it. That's where Molly comes in - she represents everything he just doesn't want at that point in time, especially when his career's taking off.

Q: What kind of person is Molly?

SPENCER: She seems really out there to Neal, and when he meets people who are totally out there, there's an immediate attraction. Then there's the whole connection with her dad being [musician] Tommy Gunn. Also, she can be crazy, but she's got a lot of integrity at the same time. He falls for her, but doesn't want to go there. It's just not the right timing for him.

Q: You sing a lot in the film. What's your background with music?

SPENCER: I've always written a lot of songs and played in high school bands, but I've also been classically trained. With Uptown Girls, I've been part of the process from the very beginning - playing guitars, tweaking the tunes, doing harmonies. It was a good opportunity to really get in front of the microphone and play.

Q: Did you have any hand in choosing the guitar you play in the film? If not, have you always wanted a specific guitar?

SPENCER: I've actually always wanted a 1950's acoustic, one of those big old guitars like Johnny Cash would play. Neal's is a similar thing, kind of beat up but it has sentimental value. I'm into guitars, so I really enjoyed being able to walk into a shop and pick them out and play a few
