Q:
Tell us about Uptown Girls and your character's relationship with Molly Gunn
(Brittany Murphy).
FANNING: Brittany Murphy, who plays Molly, is my nanny in the film. Molly's business manager took all her money and fled to South America, so Molly has to get a job - and she's never worked in her life. She gets a job as a nanny for me, and I'm very mean to her at first [laughs]. So Uptown Girls is about how Molly and Ray build a relationship throughout the story.
Q: What made you want to play the part of Ray? Are you and she alike at all?
FANNING: Well,
I've been doing ballet for six and a half years, and in this movie, Ray does
tons of ballet. And I've never played anybody like Ray. She wears blazers all
the time and her hair is in ponytails. She's kind of mean, actually [laughs]. It
looked like a fun role.
Q: What was it like working with Brittany Murphy?
FANNING: Brittany just brings everything. She puts you in a real good mood. And we can really communicate with our lines. They just bounce back and forth.
Q: Was it fun shooting on the teacups ride at Coney Island?
FANNING: They were so pretty. We got the best one, the pink one. It had a big teapot in the middle, and then teacups all around it with the saucers and stuff. Then I got to ride the Scrambler for fun.
Q: Spinning round and round, did you get sick?
FANNING: Actually, I was okay because we didn't go that fast. But when Brittany and I were in there, the guy helped us spin it because it was very heavy. He went really fast and Brittany got dizzy, but I was okay.
