Twelve Years of Robot Battles at Dragon*Con

Robot Battles(ATLANTA, GA) -- For over a decade, robotics enthusiasts have been coming to Atlanta's Dragon*Con convention to participate in a  modern version of gladiatorial combat, simply called "Robot Battles".  Homemade robots crashed, smashed, and thrashed one another under the watchful gaze of the contestants and the eager eyes of an ever-growing audience.

The event was first staged at Dragon*Con in 1991 with only three contestants and a small audience, but has grown each year with the 2001 competition hosting well over thirty contestants and nearly one thousand fans excitedly following all the mechanical mayhem and action.

This year, Robot Battles organizer and host Kelly Lockhart says that he is expecting the biggest turnout ever, "Due to the incredible exposure 'BattleBots', 'Robotica', and 'Robot Wars' have given to our hobby, I have been deluged with questions all year long from people interested in building and entering their own robot in the competition."

Lockhart goes on to say, "Nearly all of our contestants from the past few years are planning on returning, and because of the  media exposure robotic sports have received recently, I am expecting at least twenty to thirty new contestants.  It should be an absolutely fantastic event this year!"

The event will be held in the Hyatt Regency Atlanta's Regency Ballroom on Monday, September 2, 2002 with contestants scheduled to arrive by 10:00 am.

Even our own Kelly Lockhart can be linked to Kevin Bacon by 3 degrees of separation. In the 70s, John Schneider used to baby-sit for Kelly and his sister. John Schneider was in Eddie Macon's Run (1983) with J.C. Quinn. J.C. Quinn was in Digging to China (1998) with Kevin Bacon.
