The chef came out and talked to us and told us what to avoid. They also provide special soy sauce that is gluten free (unlike the regular soy sauce on the table). The plum wine is great too, as are all the desserts. comments: Tell the helpful waitperson about your needs. The chef will also be very willing to come and talk with you. Tam Deli and Cafe 8222 North Lamar Suite D-33 Part of Town: Northwest Phone: 834 6458 Cost: Type of Food: Vietnamese Foods Recommended Items: Tam is a small Vietnamese Sandwich shop that I had enjoyed many times before being diagnosed with CD a year ago. The food is fresh and wonderful. I had not been back because I didn't think there would be any menu items that I could enjoy. But with a party coming up I wanted to feed my guests her wonderful shrimp and egg sandwiches on her homemade French bread. I went in expecting not to be able to eat much, but I was greatly surprised. Tam knew about gluten and I explained that I could not have anything with soy sauce in it. Since the restaurant is small (10-12 tables) she waits on you herself and makes many of the food items herself. She is very gracious. I had (Tom Thit)Fresh Spring Roll (vermicelli, Shredded Lettuce, rolled in Rice Paper) 2 for $2.85 No. 1a on the menu I also had (Banh Xeo)Vietnamese Crepe filled with shrimp, pork, and bean spouts.No. 5 on the menu. The crepe is made from rice flour. it was wonderful and very filling. She made sure the dipping sauces were only rice vinegar, shredded carrots and red pepper. She told me the Fish Sauce would have wheat in it. She recommended several other dishes for me to try when I came back: (Goi Tom Thi) a Vietnamese Salad with Shrimp, Pork, Cucumber and carrots served with shrimp chips. No. 6 on the menu. (Banh uot Tom Nuong) Steamed Rice Sheets topped with Char-grilled Shrimp No.33 on the menu (Banh Cuon Nhan Thit Cha Lua)Steamed Rice Wraps filled with ground Pork and Mushroom and topped with Pork Roll (their version of sauage) Since I didn't have this dish I don't know what is in their sauage. You would have to ask. No. 34 and Banh Cuon Tom Steamed Rice Wraps filled with sauteed Shrimp and topped with shredded dried shrimp No. 37 For anyone in your family who DOES NOT have CD her French Cream Puffs are to die for. She makes them fresh every day. comments: Because the restaurant is small and the food fresh, I feel very safe eating there. Just be sure to ask her. Her sister was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma and her doctor apparently advised her to eat gluten free. This little restaurant has been written up in the Austin Paper and Dale Rice highly recommends it, for the simple delicious food. more locations: This is their only location. This recommendation thanks to Marguerite Hirsch ~ Tuesday, August 01, 2006
China Sea 3742 Far West Blvd. Part of Town: Northwest Phone: 338-6003 Cost: Type of Food: Chinese comments: This information was given to me by member Martha Blomquist. I have never eaten here. Matt's El Rancho 2613 South Lamar Boulevard Austin, Texas 778704 Part of Town: South Phone: (512) 462-9333 Cost: Type of Food Mexican Recommended Items: I had a good experience at Matt's El Rancho on South Lamar recently. I called the manager in the afternoon before dining there that evening. He said they have a list of which ingredients/dishes contain gluten. They use the list to train their staff but don't have it in a menu format. He offered to print a copy and have it at the host station when I arrived later for dinner. When we arrived they couldn't find the sheet, but the server came to the table with their kitchen copy of the list and we worked out what options would be safe. They said their corn tortillas do not contain wheat. Many of their dishes are GF if they don't sprinkle the final seasonings on them. I ordered Fajitas and they were great. Despite the busy atmosphere in the restaurant, the service was great and I had no reaction. I 'll definitely go there again. http://www.mattselrancho.com/map&hours2.htm This recommendation thanks to Christine Egli ~ Sunday, May 14, 2006
Hill Country Dining Room at Barton Creek Resort 8212 Barton Club Dr Part of Town: Westlake Phone: (512) 329-4527 Cost: Type of Food: We were there for Sunday Brunch Recommended Items: Since we did not eat dinner there I am guessing at the entree cost. comments: We were there for brunch on Mother's Day. Since it was Mother's Day I did not make the arrangements. The buffet was lovely with lots of choices. Many were gluten laden but a lot appeared to be GF. In addition they had an omelet station and all of the options here also appeared GF. There was a full dessert buffet (full of gluten) to die for. That said, none of it mattered. When we made the reservations we asked about GF options and they prepared a special GF meal. It was served at the table and even included dessert. The staff in the restaurant and in the kitchen seem well versed on GF and could not have been more helpful. Because they were so attentive I am sure you could get an excellent GF meal at anytime. It was pricey but worth it. morelocations: Have you tried any other locations? If you'd recommend them enter their addresses (and part of town) here. Fire Bowl Cafe La Frontera 150 Sundance Pkwy. Round Rock Part of Town: Round Rock Phone: 512-248-2695 Cost: Type of Food: Chinese Recommended Items: You may order from a apecial menu which list gluten-free items. They have various kinds of noodles which may be selected in lieu of rice to include in your stir fry dish. Two of these include buckwheat, and rice noodles. You can also select from a large assortment of your own vegetables to include. And you can select fish, shrimp, beef, or chicken. They assured me that they clean the grill after each customer's selection is cooked. Here are the items listed that are gluten-free: Soft Thai Summer Rolls, without peanut sauce Spicy Coconut Soup Thai Seafood Tom Kah Soup Asian Chicken Salad, without teriyaki sauce Grilled Teriyaki Salmon Salad, without teriyaki sauce Ginger White Wine Sauce Bangkok Red Curry Sauce Thai Yellow Curry Sauce (you can select these sauces to be included with any stir fry) Their menu also lists which items are MSG free. I tried the Ginger White Wine sauce with my stir fry and found it to be too bland, so will try the curry sauce next. The restaurant was clean and service was friendly - the cashier said her aunt was celiac. There are also locations: Austin Arboretum Great Hills Market 9828 Great Hills Trail 512-795-8998 South Austin Sunset Valley Village 5601 Brodie Lane 512-899-8998 San Antonio Alamo Quarry Market 255 E. Red Lobster 2702 Parker Rd. Round Rock Texas 78681-7983 Part of Town: Round Rock Phone: 512-600-0145 Cost: Type of Food: Seafood Recommended Items: I had a wonderful experience I had Saturday at Red Lobster in Round Rock. The manager and the waitress went overboard to accommodate me for not just celiac, but also for all my other food allergies and the meal was excellent. I ordered 12 extra large grilled shrimp large portion of baby carrots large portion of fried rice apple sauce I had a very pleasant experience and will defiantly go there again! Waterloo Ice House 6203 N. Capitol of Texas Hwy Part of Town: Westlake Phone: 418-9700 Cost: Type of Food: Hamburger, TexMex Recommended Items: The menu at Waterloo Ice House was checked mainly with a view of what children could eat there because of their wonderful playscape. The staff is extremely helpful and was happy to answer questions. Best of all, there is a large binder with laminated pages that has the exact recipe for every item that they serve. If in doubt about any items, simply ask to see their recipe page. The key points when dining here are that (1) the meat and chicken are the only things cooked on the grill, meat on one side and chicken on the other, and only salt and pepper are used as seasonings so all non-breaded meat and chicken are fine and (2) the french fries are cooked with other breaded items so that cross-contimanation is an issue so don't eat the fries or tater tots. That said, the chips, queso, guacamole, bbq sauce, mashed potoatoes, black beans, refried beans, rice and vegetable of the day (fresh veggies, just steamed and with no more that salt, pepepr and butter on them always) all are gluten free. The chili is not, they buy it ready and the fourth from the last item on the ingredients label is oats. The chips are commercial tortilla chips and are not reheated or anything are were fine the day we were there. We did not check the salad dressings or soups the day that we were there but probably will in the future. The Texas Tortilla Catfish has a corn meal and crushed tortilla breading, but it also has flour so stay away from that. Good choices are the "Platters" served without the Texas Toast: Marinated chicken or beef fajitas (without the tortillas) Grilled chicken platter Ranch house chicken Queso chopped steak Chopped steak Any burgers, sandwiches or chicken sandwiches without the bun (did not check specifically about pulled pork, ribs, meatloaf or tacos) The full menu may be found at their website: http://www.waterlooicehouse.com/ comments: Order some chips with salsa or queso or some nachos and send the kids off to play in the playscape while you check the menu. If you want to try something that isn't mentioned here already, just tell your waiter that you can't have anything with wheat, rye, barley or oats and ask if you could see the recipe page from the big white book for the item(s) that you are thinking of ordering. There are tables outside and there are tables inside and there are lots of big screen televsions. The people there are very freindly and very helpful. LindasTouchOfChocolate.com Linda Deluna Address2: San Marcos, TX Phone: 512-878-0750 Cost: She will accommodate a Gluten Free/Wheat Free request for her chocolate fountain rental for your party or special occassion. Recommended Items: She offers packages which include fresh fruits of your choice. comments: If you have gluten free cookies you want available for dipping, then you can bring or make your own. This is NOT a resturant but a Chocolate Fountain Fondue Rental. Linda offers different packages for your upcoming party, wedding, birthday party, meeting, etc. more locations: They will travel to San Antonio or Austin area. If you have a special event outside of this area, she may charge mileage. This recommendation thanks to James Esquivel who eats her chocolate fountain treats just about every weekend! Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen Address: North I35 & Hwy. 290 intersection Part of Town: North Phone: 452-9363 Cost: Type of Food: Cajun/Creole Recommended Items: Pepper Shrimp butterflied jumbo shrimp with a citrus glaze, served with dirty rice & asparagus Order WITHOUT the citrus glaze because it contains soy sauce. comments: I always ask to speak with the manager who personally supervises my meal. I prefer the woman manager (didn't get her name) who seemed very knowledgeable when I presented my dining out card. She said this dish is popular with GF customers. I have had the Pepper Shrimp on numerous occasions. Order WITHOUT the citrus glaze because it contains soy sauce. The beautiful dish has lots of spicy flavor. I really enjoy the peppery shrimp and the delicious dirty rice. It is a generous portion. This recommendation thanks to Susan Read who ate there last in January of 2006 From a second recommendation, this one by Melissa M who last ate there Jan 2006... Address: 6319 N IH-35 Part of Town: Northeast Phone: 452-9363 Cost: Type of Food: Cajun/Creole, Seafood (Crawfish, seafood) Recommended Items: Blackened catfish (lunch = runs about $9) - expensive but a huge piece of fish! Fresh oysters also (not sure abt the sauce) Salads looked good, did not try. Baked potato, veggies, all good. comments: I ordered the catfish (plain not blackened) off the lunch menu and had no problems. For extra, they gave me a baked potato which was huge. It usually comes with grilled veggies. The minute after I ordered, the manager came to speak to me about my "wheat" allergy and when i clarified I was celiac, he immediately said "gluten" Imagine my joy! :) Carraba's Italian Grill Address: 11590 Research Blvd. (Hwy 183) Austin, TX 78759 Part of Town: Northwest Phone: (512) 345-8232 Cost: Type of Food: Italian Recommended Items: Pollo Rosa Maria with side of steamed brocolli and house salad Request no grill baste for chicken and mix the salad in a fresh bowl comments: Give us all the help and advice you can for having a good safe Celiac Friendly meal here Menu page on the Carrabbas website and a link directly to the PDF of the Gluten Free Menu Online This is the web site to look at the gluten-free menu.
